Fuidmecanica has signed a contract to build the main towing winch for the new Canadian icebreaker CCGS Arpatuuq.
Fluidmecanica has a long experience on cold weather winches since 2003, with more than 50 units in service. Some projects intended for extreme polar conditions with temperatures as low as -60ºC.
The construction of the vessel was included in the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy. The Polar Icebreaker Project (previously Polar Class Icebreaker Project) is an ongoing Canadian shipbuilding program under the National Shipbuilding Strategy. With an intention to replace the ageing CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent with a new polar icebreaker. It consists of two planned icebreakers, CCGS Arpatuuq and CCGS Imnaryuaq, with the first vessel expected to enter service in 2030.
The CCGS Arpatuuq is a future Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker being built under the Polar Icebreaker Project as part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy. Its construction began at Helsinki Shipyard and the vessel is expected to join the fleet after outfitting at Davie Shipbuilding in Canada by 2030.
