The first nuclear-powered icebreaker of project 22220 “Arktika” reached the North Pole during tests, the press service of the Baltic Shipyard reports: “On October 3, at 18:00, the future flagship of the Russian nuclear icebreaker fleet, nuclear-powered icebreaker Arktika, project 22220, under the flag of the Baltic Shipyard, reached the North Pole. During a two-week trip from St. Petersburg to the city of Murmansk, specialists of the delivery team of the Baltic Shipyard (part of the USC) representatives of the customer are checking the operation of the nuclear icebreaker in ice conditions” the message says.
In the near future “Arktika” will arrive in Murmansk, where it is planned to sign the acceptance certificate.
Nuclear powered icebrakers of the Project 22220 series will lead ship convoys across the Arctic, breaking through ice approximately three meters thick.
Design and construction Main towing winch was awarded to Fluidmecanica for the 3 hulls: Arktika, Sibir and Ural.
They were approved by RMRS.
